Description

"Lemuel 'Slim' Heacox, watchman at the remote Cashin Mine took his last breath on Thanksgiving Day, 1921. The mystery and fear that surrounded the events of this death held sway over the rugged Paradox Valley, in the county of Montrose, Colorado; and was reported on daily by the two newspapers 100 miles away in the county seat: The Montrose Daily Enterprise and the Montrose Daily Press. This grizzly tale is set against the background of the Wild West in a remote region where gunslingers and outlaws still took refuge in the rim rocks, and justice was often doled out too quickly at the hands of local settlers. To read this story is to be immersed in the harsh realities of life on the [frontier], as well as the local color of the times. The news reports have been recorded here exactly as they were printed so that the style of speech and writing remains evident and consistent throughout the story."--cover [p.4].
