George and Hazel met at a church social, and
according to George, it was love at first sight. They
were married February 12, 1943. At the tender age of
19, he enlisted in the US Navy. He served as an aircraft
mechanic in the Pacific theatre during WWII. While
stationed on Saipan, he shared chaplain duties and
through this experience felt God called him to preach
and teach His Word.
After the war, he pursued his true calling and became
an ordained minister, attending Baptist Bible College
in Denver. He ministered to congregations throughout
Colorado: Westminster, Aspen, New Castle, Palisade,
Briggsdale, Brighton, and Brush. He loved to study
Greek and Hebrew and to share the excitement of a new
revelation that he had discovered. As he served in some
of these churches, he sometimes worked part time and
developed many skills. He would laugh and say he was
a “Jack of all trades, but master of none.”
Actually he was very skillful and his children
thought there was nothing he couldn’t do. He was
an accomplished carpenter, welder, mechanic, and
especially loved helping on the farms of parishioners
who needed an extra hand. He demonstrated Christ’s
love with actions as well as words.
In his retirement, he became a prolific and
accomplished artist, carving in wood and painting in
acrylic and oil. He never thought of himself as such and
signed his works as an “accidental painting by George.”
His infectious laugh and great humor will be missed
by everyone who knew him.
There will be an internment service at Veterans
Memorial Cemetery Thursday, August 26, 2021, at
10:00. Friends and family are all welcome.
Donations to HopeWest Hospice and Palliative Care
of Grand Junction are appreciated, in lieu of flowers.
George and Hazel are enjoying their heavenly home
together with their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Arrangements entrusted to Palisade Funeral Home.
