Dielon C.
Harwood
September 3, 1927 - June 16, 2021
Dielon Campbell Harwood
was born to Ross and Arlie
(Campbell) Harwood on
September 3, 1927, in Guion,
Texas. He grew up in Texas,
New Mexico, and California.
At the age of 17, Dielon joined
the U.S. Navy. He served in
three wars: WWII, Korea, and
Vietnam. He served on many ships and carriers, including USS
Phillipine Sea, USS Navarro, and USS Hopewell. After two tours
of Vietnam, he said that was enough, and retired in 1965. Although
retired, Dielon was enlisted in the Naval Reserve for ten more years.
After the service, he moved to Hotchkiss, Colorado with his
father. He joined the VFW Post #9333 in Hotchkiss, and later Post
#3981 in Grand Junction. He held many offices in the VFW, both
local and at state level.
While stationed in Virginia, Dielon met and married Margaret Fry
(deceased). They were blessed with son, Jack Franklin Harwood,
Sr. (deceased). They later divorced.
He met second wife, Florine Elsberry Campbell (deceased), in
Hotchkiss. They married in Grand Junction and later moved there,
where they lived for 45 years. Dielon and Florine both enjoyed
traveling and spending time with Florine’s children, Carol and Rob
Campbell, and other relatives.
Twelve years ago, Dielon discovered that his son, Jack Sr.,
had married and had five children. Jack’s wife, Juanita, and
grandchildren, Jackie, Joyce, Justine, and Jed, all live in Honolulu,
Hawaii. Jack Jr. lives in Riverside, California; he also discovered he
had ten great-grandchildren.
After retirement, Dielon worked as a farmer, truck driver, and
security guard. He also volunteered many hours at the Veteran’s
Hospital.
Dielon is survived by step-daughter, Carol Campbell; stepdaughter-in-law, Mary (Rob) Campbell; grandson, Jack Harwood,
of Riverside, CA; step-grandchildren, Dayna (Todd) Gomon, and
Randy (Gayle) Campbell; five step-great-grandchildren; nephews,
Ben Harwood, Jr., and Danny Harwood, and niece, Elizabeth
Harwood, all of Minnesota.
Cremation has taken place and services will be July 15, 10:00
a.m., at Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HopeWest Hospice,
3090B N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81506
