Judy Maki July 23, 1949 - October 14, 2018
Judy Ann Maki, of Grand Junction, passed peacefully in her sleep, Sunday morning following a diagnosis of cancer. Her insight, calm empathy, and depth of knowledge will be sorely missed. Her inspiring reverence for the natural world and the stories and myths of Indigenous cultures remains with those who remember her. Born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on July 23rd, 1949, to Rosa Dorthia (Bielenberg) Kibler and William Bert Kibler, she lived in Whelen Springs then moved, with her family, to Rifle in 1954, settling in Uravan in 1955. She began her formal education riding horseback to the one room school house where her mother taught. Her father was a gardener and a Plant Operator with the Union Carbide Corp. Education would prove Judy’s prominent pursuit. She graduated from Nucla High school in 1966, achieved a business degree from Mesa Junior College in 1968 while working at St. Mary’s Hospital, and a Bachelors in philosophy from CSU in 1971 while opening Avogadro’s Number Restaurant in Ft. Collins with Jim, her first husband. In 1973 she divorced and followed her wanderlust, living in Aspen, taking classes at Metro State in Denver, Summering in Lake Tahoe, and road tripping through Canada while working insurance, law office, and bank positions. Judy continued traveling with her second husband, Steven Weimer, during his service with the Air Force. They have two children together, Jessica and Steve. She earned her masters in Library Science from University of Oklahoma, holding those close to her to a high expectation of good research from multiple, independent sources. Since her return to Grand Junction in 1994 she worked for Pathfinder Library Systems, the Grand Junction Central Public Library, and Thomson Library at CMU. She retired in 2016, and spent her last years close to her children. Judy is preceded in death by nephew, Michael Eakin, James Alan Maki, and Tom Harris. She is survived by children, Jessica Cooper of Palisade and Steve Weimer of Grand Junction; granddaughter, Aubrey Cooper; brother, Robert and sister-inlaw, Beverly Kibler of Golden Valley, AZ; sisters, Berta Glover of Benton, Arkansas and Opal Scott of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Robert Kibler of Ohio; Robin Kibler of New Mexico; Alan Eakin of Arkansas, and many other nieces and nephews. Her children will be dedicating a memorial to her this spring.
