Richard “Rick” Martin Poffenbarger, 53, of Eagle and Gypsum, died March 12, in Pine, Colo., at the home of his sister after a prolonged illness. Poffenbarger was born in Burlington, Iowa, on Jan. 2, 1953 to Patricia Ann (Luckenbill) and Jack Leroy Poffenbarger.A memorial celebration of his life has been scheduled for June 17, at Sweetwater Lake Resort. Friends may contribute to the Richard Poffenbarger Memorial Scholarship Fund for his daughter, Katherine, at Meridian Trust Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 548, Cheyenne, Wyo. 82003; or to a local hospice or a charity of choice in Poffenbarger’s name.

Poffenbarger spent his early childhood in western Illinois near the Mississippi River. He moved to Glenwood Springs with his family in 1968 where he graduated from Glenwood High School in 1971. He graduated from Colorado State University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in biology.He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a pilot. He married Ellen Miller of Moline, Ill., in 1976. In 1985 they had one child, Danielle.Later he attended the University of Wyoming Law School. He married Fran Cadez and had a child, Katherine in 1992. He graduated from the University of Wyoming, College of Law, and practiced law in Cheyenne for several years before opening his law office in the Eagle area.He spent the last 10 years practicing law and real estate development in the Eagle/Gypsum area. He was active in Club 20, Rotary and the chamber of commerce.

Poffenbarger especially enjoyed time with friends and family. He loved spending time in the mountains, especially around Sweetwater Lake, family members said.The year before his death, he completed work on a house overlooking Sweetwater Lake.He is survived by his daughters, Katherine (Katie) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Danielle (Dani) Poffenbarger Bennett of Ft. Collins, Colo.; his mother, Patricia Graddis of Glenwood Springs; and sisters, Adrienne Brink Scheu of Sweetwater Lake Resort, Jaclyn Gisburne of Glenwood Springs, and Kim Poffenbarger of Pine, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack.
