James Howard Stevens, 75, of Grants Pass died Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Three Rivers Community Hospital's Washington campus.

Services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, June 10, 1999, at Bethany Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Parker and the Grants Pass Elk's Lodge No. 1584 conducting. Private committal will be at the Delta City Cemetery in Delta at a later date.

Contributions may be made to a charity of donor's choice.

James was born March 22, 1924 in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended schools in Grand Rapids, Minn. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II with the mechanized cavalry. He was attached to the Philippine Rangers and served both the Philippines and Panama.

Upon his return to the United States, he installed radio and microwave towers. He also held first-class refrigeration and first-class fireman, and first-class engineer licenses.

He worked at Hunter's Point in California on nuclear powered vessels and was also a millwright. He retired from his own contracting busines for Standard Oil Company in California. He moved to Grants Pass in 1996. On June 23, 1973 he married the former Ruth Crane Bell in Lake Tahoe, Calif.

His memberships included the Elks Lodges in Concord, Calif., and Grants Pass, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, The Western Welcome Newcomers Club, and the Grants Pass Knife and Fork Club. He was a former member of the Caveman Kiwanis Club and past president of the Caveman Rogue-Runner chapter of the Good Sam Club.

He enjoyed building, repairing and tinkering in his shop, camping, traveling, music and helping others.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Hal g. Reid of Cumberland, RI, James H. Stevens of Gresham, and Burton Stevens of Georgetown, Calif.; two daughters, Shirley Hickert of Oberlin, Kan. and Rita Stevens of Fernley, Nev.: on stepniece, Trish Crane Whitecloud of Delta; one stepnephew Charles Crane of Steamboat Springs; one grand-stepniece, Leona Spiker of Delta; and eight grandchildren.
