Grand Junction Daily Sentinel page 3 D Obituary - July 10, 2014

Dean passed away peacefully late
Monday night, in the presence of
his family and friends.
He was one of six children born
to Alford and Vallie Dickman in
Westmoreland, Kansas. They later
moved to Meeker, CO, where his
father was the City Marshall, and
he graduated high school. After
attending an engineering school in
Oakland, CA for two years, he returned to Meeker and worked on a
ranch for seven years.
Dean also served in the U.S. Army in 1943 for the 512th Field Artillery
Battalion. After entering WWII at D-Day and serving in the Battle
of the Bulge, he was honorably discharged with the Bronze Star Medal
in 1946.
It was in Meeker, however, where he met his wife, Lois. They moved
to Junction City, KS where they gave birth to their only child, Verna
Lynn. They later moved to Great Bend, KS to pursue opportunities
as drive-in owners. The family eventually moved back to the Western
Slope in Grand Junction, CO to open another drive-in restaurant,
Dean’s Drive In - home of the locally famous Pizza Burger.
After retiring, Dean and Lois spent their time in Grand Junction and
18 years of winter months in Apache Junction, AZ. With his free time,
he enjoyed camping and fishing on the Grand Mesa as well as woodworking
crafts, gardening, and playing pool at the local Senior Center.
Dean was a faithful member of Northeast Christian Church where he
attended regularly.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Lois; sister, Velna,
and two brothers, Kenneth and Russell “Buck”.
Survivors include one daughter, Verna, and her husband, Floyd Elliott
of Grand Junction; two grandchildren, Travis Elliott of Aspen and Amy
Elliott of Grand Junction, and one great-grandson, Jaiden; two brothers,
Gerald of Alamosa, CO, and Ronnie and his wife, Kay of Tucson,
AZ, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was loved by many more
and will be missed by all who knew him.
Dean felt he had the best of care, thanks to HopeWest and the VA
Hospital.
His farewell and last service will be at the Northeast Christian Church
on Saturday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Veterans
Cemetery in Grand Junction on a future date.
Donations, in Dean’s name, can be made to HopeWest Hospice.
