David Johns, 72, of Steamboat Springs, died at 4:45 a.m. April 28, 2013, of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
David was born to Arthur B. Johns and Florence Lucille (Helbig) Johns on May 7, 1940, in Denver during the year of the dragon. He was the youngest among his parents’ four children. He attended Lakewood Elementary, was a 1954 graduate of Lakewood Junior High School and was a 1957 graduate of the Colorado Military Academy. After graduation, Airmen 3rd Class David shipped to Mitchell Air Force Base in New York.
David married Carole Miller, of Hempstead, N.Y., in 1958. The couple later divorced. They had two children: a son, Scott, born in 1959, and a daughter, Wendy, born in Denver in 1963. Scott was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1993.
David married a second time to Linda Forstead, and they divorced. He married a third time to Gail Kanner Lazarus, and they divorced. No children were born to either of those marriages.
David was a general contractor for Johns Construction. He was a member of the North America Hunting Club, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, County Sheriffs of Colorado, Elks Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an active community volunteer and participated in many events, including bike rallies and making pancakes at community breakfasts.
David lived in Steamboat and Clark for the past 35 years. He lived a stone’s throw away from the Yampa River with his dog, Bud III, and cat, Thistle. Each summer, he planted a vegetable garden in his yard. He also was a wildlife artist. He loved outdoor life, including hunting, fishing, horseback riding, snow shoeing and skiing. Each year, David rode his Harley-Davidson to the motorcycle rally in Sturges, S.D.
David was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Virginia Rose (Johns) Lind; his brother, William Burgan Johns Sr.; and his son.
David is survived by his daughter, Wendy (Johns) Hunt, of Fanningdale, N.Y.; his only grandchild, Ashley Johns, of Clarksville, Tenn., born to Scott Johns; sister Elinor (Johns) Campbell, of Denver; niece Carolyn Lucille (Campbell) Barlock and her sons, of Denver; niece Linda (Campbell) Hamrock Cortez, of Texas, and her children; grandniece Brandi Campbell and her children, Collin Michael Campbell and Courtney Campbell, of Denver; grandniece Sherri (Hamrock) Enroth and daughter Christine, of Texas; grandnephew Breck Hamrock and his sons Breck Jr. and Bryton, of Texas; nephews William B. Johns Jr., of Australia, Christopher Johns, of Alabama, and Eric Johns, of Florida, and Randy and Scott Lind; and niece Julie Ann (Lind) Johnson, of Idaho.
A service is at 1 p.m. June 8, 2013, at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4264 and American Legion Post 44 will conduct the memorial service with military honors. David’s remains were cremated, and his name was engraved on the family headstone at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver.
