Cathy Miles of Steamboat Springs died at her home May 5, 2008, following a long and courageous battle against cancer. She was 55.
Cathy was born Feb. 23, 1953, in Redding, Iowa, to Phyllis Norris. She spent her early childhood in Des Moines, Iowa. Her later childhood was spent in Idaho with her grandparents, her sister Sandra and two brothers Douglas and Michael. In 1966, she moved to New Mexico where she graduated from Aztec High School. In the summer of 1970, she moved to Steamboat Springs.
Cathy met the love of her life, Duane Miles, in Steamboat Springs when he returned from the service in 1971. Their son Mike was born in 1973. Duane and Cathy were married in 1991.
Cathy had many jobs during her 38 years in Steamboat Springs. Many people remember her from the Side Step Restaurant where she worked for many years. She started at Yampa Valley Medical Center in 2000 and worked there until April 2008.
Cathy had a remarkable green thumb and enjoyed gardening in the summer. Her other favorite pastimes included reading and spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her strength of character her amazing determination, and her unmatched fight to live.
For the past five years, Cathy battled cancer with astounding strength and inspirational determination, all the while maintaining her faith and sense of humor.
Cathy is survived by her husband and best friend Duane Miles; her son, Mike; her step-son, Wayne; and her step grandson, Christopher; mother, Phyllis Norris Van Zandt of Des Moines; sister, Sandra; nieces, Heather, Crystal, and Sarah of Darby, Mont.; brother, Douglas and niece Chelsey of Des Moines; three great nieces, Cheyenne Russell of Chariton, Iowa and Samantha Russell and Kianna Hauf of Darby, Mont.; half-sisters, Deanna Lynch/Beck of Indianola, Iowa, Jennifer Sims/ Kennedy of Des Moines; half-brothers Kenny and Steve Sims of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
Cathy is preceded in death by her brother Michael and both sets of grandparents.
