One hundred and one years, eight months and 24 days is a long life achieved by Mr. Robert “Bob” Mattison Myers, who passed on to join his brother, Everett; father, Walter Myers; and mother, Olinia, on Nov. 30, 2010.
Bob was a man who had a smile, a twinkle in his eye and a good story to share through his entire life, including about his early years of adventures on Crane Island in Minnesota and his 100th birthday proclamation as “Bob Myers Day” in Hayden. His life’s journey included being the son of a college professor, husband to his wife, Gladys, for almost 50 years; husband to his second wife, Ginny; and father to his daughter, Lynne (Myers) Caddell.
Bob’s adventures included flying for the U.S. Navy in 1921, graduating with honors from University of Minnesota School of Engineering and earning a master’s degree in social work. Through his work in social services, he adopted a belief in pacifism. His life travels moved him from Minnesota to New York to Pennsylvania on to Massachusetts and finally to Colorado. Bob’s time as director of Hampshire County Children’s Aid and Family Service in Northampton, Mass., allowed him to provide care and support with his kind and thoughtful manner. As Bob wrote in his book “Story of My Life,” “I ... am thankful for the help others give me and the opportunities I find to be helpful to others.”
Bob leaves a full life of adventure, care and family who have wonderful memories of his life, including his daughter, Lynne Caddell; son-in-law, Joe; sister, Marjorie Douglas; grandchildren Jonathan, David and Heather (Caddell) Park; five great-grandsons; many nieces and nephews; and the family of his second wife’s son, Michael Sweeny.
Bob will be missed by all those who have known his spirit and kindness that lives on continuing his mission to make the world a better place. In honor of his memory, a small family memorial service will be held at a later date.
