James “Jim” R. Carollo was born Aug. 21, 1946, in Rock Springs, Wyo., to Al Carollo Sr. and Leona Carollo. Jim grew up in a lively household with three brothers, Al Jr., Robert (“Bob”) and John Carollo. After graduating from Rock Springs High School, Jim was drafted into the Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968.
After returning from Vietnam, Jim attended college and graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in geology. Jim always had a love of the outdoors and enjoyed hiking and backpacking in the Wind River mountains with his friends. Jim frequently pointed out and explained various rock formations on family road trips.
Jim and his future wife, Carolyn Harrison, grew up together in Rock Springs. They were married in 1972 in Laramie. They were blessed with two beautiful children, James R. Carollo Jr. and Jane H. Carollo. As a family, they enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Pinedale, Wyo., swimming, jet-skiing and boating on Fremont Lake with their close friends and family.
Jim was preceded in death by his Carolyn, who passed away in June 1989. After Carolyn’s death, Jim dedicated his life to the comfort and happiness of his children.
Jim later married Fran Kovach on Aug. 22, 1993, at his ranch outside of Pinedale. He and Fran and their five children moved to Steamboat Springs in summer 1994. While living in Steamboat, Jim enjoyed spending time in his garage working on cars and various projects in the house and around the barn. An animal lover, he enjoyed raising horses with Fran.
Jim was a loving husband and father who was extremely generous not only with his family, but also with his friends. Jim had a dry sense of humor and enjoyed playing practical jokes and teasing family and friends. Jim encouraged all around him to enjoy life, find happiness and to live in a place as beautiful as the Yampa Valley.
After fighting a heroic battle with cancer, Jim passed away May 17, 2011, in Steamboat Springs. His memory will be cherished by family and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Carollo; his brother, Bob Carollo; and his father, Al Carollo Sr. Jim is survived by his wife, Fran Carollo; son, James R. Carollo Jr.; daughter, Jane H. Carollo; and step-daughters Jenny Daily (Matt), Katie West (Brent Tollar) and Stevie West.
