James Harrison (Harry) Cox
died on June 20, 2012 at the Hospice
Care Center, he was 90 years
old. He was born in DeBeque, CO
to Dave and Nancy Jane Cox.
Harry was raised on “The Mesa”
southwest of DeBeque and spent
much of his childhood on horseback.
After graduating, he joined the Navy. While stationed in
Providence, RI, the handsome young sailor met a beautiful city girl -
Anna (Ann) Peters. They were married in Rhode Island on June 24,
1944. After several years in the city, they moved back to Harry's
hometown of DeBeque. There they raised Anna's sister, Jeanette
and their children. When ranching was not profitable, Harry went to
work for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. While working away
from home and living in an “outfit” car, he penned two books-
“Sands Through the Hourglass” and “On the trail of Ole Smokey”
both in print. Harry and Anna lived and raised their family in De-
Beque, moving to Fruita in 1986. They moved to Mesa View Retirement
Community in 2010.
Harry is survived by his loving wife Anna of nearly 68 years, 3
sons Kenny (Sandy Wightman), Tom “Pudge” (Julia), and Tim, a
daughter Joyce (Dan) Peugh and daughter-in-law Sue. He left 7
grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Harry was preceded in
death by his sister Mayo Payne, his son Russ and two grandsons
Shane and Scott Cox.
Harry enjoyed many hobbies throughout life and instilled the love
of those passions in both his children and grandchildren. His hobbies
included hunting, gardening, quilting, animal husbandry, cowboy
poetry, writing, a love of guitar and classic country music. One
of Harry's favorite pastimes was singing and reciting poetry to his
grandchildren. Harry was also well known for his jokes, his many
“one-liners”, and his extensive knowledge of the history of Western
Colorado.
Harry requested that there be no services, however; his ashes will
be interred at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions
can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western
Colorado 3090 North 12th Street, Unit B, Grand Junction, CO
81506.
