Lucille Jane Flaherty was born
in Denver, Colorado on January
12, 1923. She was the middle
child of Irish immigrants, Daniel
J. Flaherty and Jennie Dougherty
Flaherty.
Lucille attended Denver schools,
St. Catherine of Siena and Cathedral
High School. She graduated Magna cum Laude from Mt. St. Joseph
College near Cincinnati, Ohio. She worked as an analytical research
chemist in Boston and Denver.
In Denver, she met a CU medical school student, Victor A. Crumbaker.
They married on Flag Day, June 14, 1949.
Lucille continued to work during Vic's internship in Denver. Lucille
thoroughly enjoyed the next move to in Bremerhaven, Germany
with the U. S. Army. Part of that time they were joined by Vic's
younger sister, Jody, who worked on the base. Lucille and Vic travelled
throughout Europe -- and their children remember stories about
the tulips in Holland, the great parties, lifelong friends they made
among the other physician families stationed there and seeing (but
not being stopped by) a guard as they were cross country skiing
somewhere near the East German border. Their daughter, Mary Lucille,
was born in Bremerhaven in 1951.
Lucille and Vic's next stop was Gillette, Wyoming where Vic was
in general practice for one year. Though the small town and severe
winter weather were not to Lucille's liking, she made the best of it.
Lucille and Vic then returned to Fort Logan, Colorado, where Vic
completed a residency in Internal Medicine. Next Lucille and Vic
looked for a place to settle down and chose Grand Junction, Colorado.
They arrived in 1956 and never left. They welcomed two sons,
Allan John in 1957 and Daniel Victor in 1963. Lucille was a devoted
Roman Catholic affiliated with her local parishes, St. Joseph's
and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Lucille was involved in many, many community and educational
activities over the decades. A partial list includes the Great Books
program, the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy, Mesa County and
Colorado State Medical Alliance, Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish
Council, St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, Nominating Commission for
the 21st Judicial District, Catholic Outreach, League of Women
Voters, Mesa County Democrats, Grand Junction Housing Authority
and Colorado Health Facilities Review Council.
Lucille was the founding manager of the Grand Junction Musical
Arts Association beginning in 1978. With her leadership, the Grand
Junction Symphony grew into a 68-member stipend orchestra with
an auditioned chamber ensemble, 150 member volunteer chorus and
a youth orchestra.
She was elected President of the Colorado State Medical Alliance
in 1970 and was honored as Citizen of the Year in 1978 by the
Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce.
Lucille's personal interests included travel, tennis, bridge, reading,
southwestern arts and architecture and classical music.
Her parents and her older sister, Helen J. Flaherty, SCC, preceded
Lucille in death. She is survived by her husband, Victor; her three
children; her daughter-in- law, Beth (Allan); two grandchildren,
Lauren Malia and Leah Danielle; her younger brother, Rev. Daniel
J. Flaherty and sister-in-law, Jody Mercer Wallace.
We survivors cherish so many memories. Some revolve around the
family ski trips and vacation; her determination and faithfulness;
discussions about politics and religion; her empathy for victims of
discrimination and underdogs in general; her unswerving support for
Vic and his profession in the face of long, unpredictable hours; her
enjoyment of a drink before dinner; dinner parties, picnics and meals
with friends and colleagues and her love of travel.
In addition, we are especially grateful for the warm support we've
received from Lucille's many friends throughout our lives and
especially during the recent years of her decline.
A rosary will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel on
Thursday, March 22, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. And, there will be a
memorial Mass in the main church on Friday, March 23, 2012, at
10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Grand Junction
Symphony Foundation or Catholic Outreach.
