Sue, Born in Carlsbad, New
Mexico on August 24th, 1933,
went to be with her Lord, at the
age of 78, in the Hospice Care
Center, surrounded by her loving
family.
Sue was the only child of Juanita
and Gerry Smith. They lived
on a large cattle ranch many miles from town, where she learned to
love the ranching way of life and nurtured many bum sheep on a
bottle. Her parents later divorced and she was raised by her father
and grandmother whom she loved dearly and where she learned so
many of her cooking skills.
Sue went to Carlsbad High School and graduated in 1951, along
with children from the Niblett family. In 1952 Sue married Carroll
Niblett, after he returned home from the Army. Together they built a
new home and started their family and life of commitment together.
They have one daughter, Ronda and a deceased son, Brad. A strong
family work ethic and Christian values were very evident in their
lives, whether farming, ranching, playing sports together or worshiping
at church.
The Niblett family was strong in their Christian faith and attended
church every Sunday morning and evening, plus Wednesday meetings.
If the doors were open - the Niblett's were there! Sue and Carroll
both taught Sunday School classes and served the church in
many ways for many years. Sue loved to sing church hymns, often
with a tear rolling down her cheek. Whenever food was needed for
an event or church gathering, Sue was eager to make some of her
delicious southern meals, or some of her special Mexican dishes
followed by a delicious homemade pie.
Sue and her family moved from Carlsbad, New Mexico in 1961 to
a farm on 21 Road, near Fruita, Colorado, where together they
worked the farm ground and raised a wide assortment of farm animals.
Sue had a large vegetable garden and raised chickens for both
eggs and meat. She would drive the sugar beet truck during harvest,
taxi kids and their friends around for school events and have a
hearty meal on the table for the family and crew.
Sue's family was the most important thing in her life, always supporting
each family member and welcoming all their friends into the
Niblett home, as well as being the number one helpmate to Carroll
with his farming and ranching ventures.
In 1969 the Niblett family bought a large ranch in southwest New
Mexico where they relocated and worked to raise cattle and horses
for the next 24 years. Once retired, Sue and Carroll returned to the
Grand Valley, just two miles from the farm that they had owned in
the 60's, to be close to their kids and granddaughter, Shay.
Sue is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Carroll; daughter,
Ronda (Jerald) Sutton; granddaughter, Shay (Bobby) Boe and
great-grandson, Logan Boe. Sue was preceded in death by her
mother, Juanita Clark and her son, Brad Niblett in 2010.
Memorial services will take place at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary,
Friday, February 3, 2012, 10:30 a.m. followed by interment at Elmwood
Cemetery, Fruita, CO.
In lieu of flowers the Niblett family requests donations be made to
Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090 N. 12th
Street, #B, Grand Junction, CO 81506. The incredible outpouring of
love to Sue and her family, from close friends and Hospice workers
was so greatly appreciated.
