Roy Prudhomme, beloved father,
husband, grandfather, and
great-grandfather, died of complications
of pneumonia on May 5,
2012. At 92 years of age, he lived
a full and complete life.
Roy was born in Natchitoches,
Louisiana on December 3, 1919,
to Viola Aubrey and Robert Lee
Prud'homme. The family, including
Roy's only sibling and older sister, Madeline, moved to Denver
when he was a toddler. Roy graduated from Wheatridge High
School in Denver. After high school he attended Colorado School of
Mines studying electrical engineering. He played basketball and
football in high school and at Colorado School of Mines. He met his
future wife, Mary Jo FitzGerald, at an Opportunity School Dance in
Denver when she was 17. They won a dance contest that night and
have been happily together ever since. He enlisted in the Army-Air
Corps during the last years of the war and they were married in San
Antonio, Texas, in 1943, where Roy was stationed for Army training.
Their 69th anniversary is May 15. Roy was a wonderful and dedicated
father to their three children, Cynthia, Joel, and Lise.
After several temporary jobs after the war, Roy was hired as an
electric engineer by General Electric where he worked in the field
on large commercial projects until he retired. During his years
working for GE he worked on many important projects throughout
the country, oil fields in Alaska, and at a major dam construction in
Venezuela. After retiring, Roy started his own home alarm installation
company in Sacramento, California. He and Mary Jo eventually
moved to Grand Junction to be near their son, Joel and his family
and return to their home state of Colorado. He could not be
unproductive for long so began his one-man wood box, birdhouse,
and wood display structure business. He ran that business for several
years selling his creations throughout Colorado until he sold the
business.
Throughout the years Roy was always working on some creative
project and enjoying life with his family, playing with his children,
coaching little league baseball, and attending any event in which his
children were participating. He and Mary Jo were involved in dance
and dinner clubs, played golf and bridge and traveled.
Roy and Mary Jo have five granddaughters, Andrea McGee-Prudhomme,
Alyson McGee, Charme Remillard, Abbey Seufer, and
Megan Beville. The youngest generation now consists of five great
grandsons.
Roy was a model citizen, father and husband. He enjoyed life to
the fullest, in spite of any adversity, and taught his children to enjoy
life and the simple things. He had the ability to make any event
more fun with his imaginative ideas or practical jokes. His legacy
will live on in his progeny and he will not be forgotten.
There will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090 N 12th
Street Suite B, Grand Junction, Colorado, 81506. Friends and family
may leave their condolences at www.martinmortuary.com.
