Dan Leroy Herrera, 63 of Leadville since 1978, passed away Sept. 11 at Hospice of St. John in Lakewood. Dan was born on Dec. 4, 1947, in Vanadium, N.M., to Joe D. and Lourdes “Lucy” (Aguilar) Herrera. On Jan. 21, 1970, Dan married Josie (Martinez) in Glenwood Springs.

Dan served four years in Korea with the United States Army. He was a miner, cook, logger and hotel attendant. He received numerous awards and accommodations during his military and work career including Employee of the Month at the hotel. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed hunting, fishing and socializing with all walks of life. He was the best dancer on the floor and the life of the party.

He is survived by Josie Herrera; children Angela Herrera and husband Jorge Blas, Leroy Pete Herrera and wife Crystal Gonzales-LaComb; grandchildren Gabriel Herrera, Jessica Blas, Jada Herrera, Dominick Herrera and Angelica Herrera; sister Josephine Martinez and husband Ronnie Lovato; brother Nazario and wife Rosina Herrera; aunts and uncles Virgie and husband Fidel Duran, Louie Mascarenas, Orlando Aguilar, Donicio Aguilar and Annie Aguilar; nieces and nephews Nadine and husband Joseph Lovato, Anthony and wife Lory Martinez, Robert Martinez and wife Jessica Smith, Clyde Herrera, Joann Herrera, Corinne Herrera and husband John Lucero, Sarena Lovato and husband Mauricio Casarez, Deon Lovato and wife Kristy Carleton, Justin Lovato, Johnny Herrera, Jr., James Herrera, Kaleb Herrera, Hope Lovato, Alexia Caserez, Rosemary Martinez, Joseph Martinez, Nicole Martinez, Anthony Martinez and Marcos Lucero; cousins Lee Herrera, Irene Madrid, Steven Serrano, Levi Herrera, Rosemary Turcott, Diana Morris and Charles Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Johnny Herrera.

Visitation will be held Thursday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville from 5-6 p.m. with a Rosary following at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Father Jesse Perez as celebrant. Burial will be private. Bailey-Kent Funeral Home of Leadville is assisting the family with arrangements.
