Grand Junction Daily Sentinel - February 4, 2010

Our beloved Steve died Saturday,
January 30, 2010 at the Hospice
Care Center after a lengthy
fight with cancer. He is now free
to sing to our hearts.
Steve was born August 24, 1946
in Cincinnati, Ohio to Eugene and
Billie Back. He attended school in
Bethel and his family moved to
Grand Junction in 1960. He
played rhythm guitar in a rock and roll band called “The Exotics”
during his teens, often entertaining at the Malt Shop, a popular teenage
hangout.
He moved to California, where he married Cecelia DelaRosa and
was blessed with a daughter, Lisa Yvonne and a son, David Eugene.
Later divorced, he came back to Colorado. He started singing again
after being coaxed on stage by Ralph and Clyde, at the Ramada Inn,
where Steve was the bar manager. In 1975 he started singing professionally,
and over the next 30 years he entertained with numerous
musicians around the Grand Valley.
Steve married the love of his life, Elaine Sundstrom at the chapel
on Baron Lake on Grand Mesa. Together, they were blessed with
two sons, Kelly Steven and Martin Tyler. Steve was very proud of
all of his children, and his delight was his two youngest grand babies.
They made him smile.
Steve was employed by Pro2Serve on the Moab UMTRA TAC
Team as an environmental technician where he performed ground
water sampling and well maintenance. He made many close friends
over the years while working at Stoller Inc., MACTEC and Rust
Geotech.
Steve touched many people through his music, he was always
willing to do a fund-raiser for anyone who fell on hard times. He
loved family and friends, music, the mountains, autumn, Canadian
geese and was fascinated with airplanes.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Back of Grand Junction, CO; his
sons, David (Sandra) Back of West Hills, CA; Kelly (Natasha) Back
of Grand Junction, CO; Martin Back of Grand Junction, CO; his
daughter, Lisa (Lalo) Sanchez of Chatsworth, CA; his grandchildren,
Christina, David, Melissa, Junior, Miyah, Tyler and Isabella;
and two great grandchildren. Steve is also survived by sisters, Darlene
(Bill) Back Davis; Cathy (Jarvis) Hatch and brother, Daryl
Back of Grand Junction; step father, Roddy Kipp of Rancho Bernardo,
CA, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by
his mother, Billie Kipp.
Arrangements are being handled by Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in
