Hazel Herwick, age 81, died
February 17, 2011 at the Colorado
State Veterans Home in
Rifle, Colorado. Her death was
due to complications from Diabetes.
Hazel Irene Parker was born
October 11, 1929 in Akron, Colorado
to Versil and Elsie Culver
Parker. When she was a young
child the family moved to Roan Creek, a welcome change, she said,
from the dry eastern plains.
During WWII her parents moved to California, then came back to
Parachute, Colorado, where Hazel met the love of her life. She and
Norman Herwick were united in marriage November 24, 1946. They
have two sons, Jim and Larry.
When barely out of her teens, Hazel was stricken with Polio which
caused her leg to be crippled, but she didn't let that interfere with life
as she wanted to live it.
During the early years of their marriage Hazel was a homemaker,
often being sole care for home and family while her husband was
away on construction projects. The family also lived in Paonia,
Montrose, and Rifle before moving to Silt Mesa over 30 years ago.
With her children grown, Hazel went to work for a Rifle title company,
finally retiring as a title examiner from Stewart Title, Aspen,
Colorado in 2000. She loved her work and made many lasting
friendships over the course of her career.
Hazel had many interests and hobbies, including sewing, genealogy,
knitting, cooking, and a big orange cat named Mittens. Her
greatest delight, however, was just being with the friends and family
that she loved so much. Some of her fondest memories were of
the times spent in hunting camps.
Hazel was pre-deceased by her mother, father, and brother, Dean
Parker.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Norman Herwick; two
sons, James of Montrose, Colorado, and Larry (Kathy) of Grand
Junction. Also surviving are granddaughters, Misty (Rob) Henson,
Montrose; Kristi (Tim) Davis, Fruita; grandsons, Kelly (Karie)
Herwick, Montrose; Andy (Cassie) Herwick, Grand Junction; and
six great grandchildren.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
For the past few years Hazel had been lovingly cared for at the
Colorado State Veterans Home, P.O. Box 1420, Rifle, Colorado
81650. It is because of their excellent program that the family requests
any memorial donations be made to the facility at the above
address.
