"After the abandonment of the Pioneer Cottonwood school in 1911, another schoolhouse of log construction was built on Antelope Creek a mile or so west of Cottonwood. Ed Robinson donated the land and Arthur Panting, Phil Maxwell and Perry Ault donated the labor with an assist from Tom Wohler. 4) Cabin

The cabin behind the Reno Cafe & bar, 127 Water St., in Red Cliff. This cabin was used as the first school in Red Cliff in 1880. Since then, it has been used as a residence [Jack Ages] and as a garage. [photo taken oct. 17, 2014, by Angela Beck]

The Derby Mesa Schoolhouse, Burns, Colorado, in 1980, being used as a private residence. The front of the school has had an addition at the front door with a roof overhang. The house number reads 13060. Gaylord Clark taught in this school from 1933-1935.

The Upper Gypsum School soon after its construction in 1910. Italianate style with cupola bell tower. The building is presently at 115 Eagle Street, Gypsum. It was used as part of Gypsum School District 5 until the districts reorganized. It then became the Bible Chapel and then was used by the Annointed Christian Fellowship.

"The first school on the Conger Mesa was held in a small cabin on the Schrupp ranch in 1911. The second one was held in this log house built by John Conger in 1892 and abandoned by him a few years later. The building was none too warm and the school furnishings crude but after seven years without a school, no one complained. The building served as a school until a frame building was built in a more central location in 1916.

School house situated at the mouth of Sunnyside Creek, Burns, Colorado, during the early 1900s. T. Harry Benton rode his horse to this school as did the children of George Benton. Evelyn Evans was the teacher. She married a local cowboy. Evidence of the schools is totally gone.

17) Nottingham Barn

Old barn just west of the Emmett Nottingham place. The barn was probably built by Clyde Nottingham around 1908. Beaver Creek is to the left. The old Avon School is just right of center. The first Avon bridge is visible in the foreground in front of the school (west of current bridges about 100 yards and lower to the water). The Joe Smith house is to the right.

19) Bailey School

Bailey School at Burns, Colorado. The log structure is above the "21" Ditch across from the T. Harry Benton home and west of the present Ben Wurtsmith home (formerly known as the Bailey Place). Martha Gates was the teacher as well as Margaret Porter (nee Brooks). Martha is now Mrs. Garland Godbold (1986).
