5) Early Gypsum

Early Gypsum where tents provided original services: hotel, stores, saloon, restaurant. Meals at the Eagle Hotel were 35 cents, a bed was 25 cents. All of these services were located across from the train depot. The location is close to present day Railroad Ave. and Second Street.

c.1932: W. H. "Dad" Wellington shown in mail wagon, with his donkey, "Jack" standing next to the railroad crossing sign at Edwards. Lettuce shed is on the far left, with stacks of crates. Wellington hauled mail from the railroad to the Edwards Post Office twice a day for over 42 yrs.

"This picture was taken about 1900. While en route from Wolcott to Steamboat Springs, the stagecoach passed through Yampa, Colorado, and stopped there allowing the passengers to watch a 4th of July rodeo celebration that was in progress. The stagecoach route was established when the D&RG railroad reached Wolcott in the year 1887." -- The Gates Genealogy

The lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Gypsum, burned after a December 15,1990, late night fire. According to Fire Chief, Dave Vroman, the blaze was traced to a furnace recently installed. First Lutheran Church of Gypsum and Mount of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Vail took over ownership...
