A freight train near the town of Minturn. Taken in the 1980s or 1990s. The railroad employee next to the diesel locomotive is unidentified. The front diesel locomotive is an EMD GP40-2, and is number 3100. The Denver and Rio Grande ordered 37 EMD GP40-2 diesel locomotives, all of which we transferred to the Union Pacific Railroad following a merger between the two railroads in 1996.

A locomotive and a butterfly are engraved at the left corner of the marker; a Marine Corps eagle, globe and anchor are engraved at the right corner. Inscription at the bottom reads: "Together again."

John E. Kavanaugh, 10 or 12 years old, standing between two men in a store, possibly in Minturn. John was born in Salida, Colorado, December 6, 1910. His parents were Henry O. Anderson and Hilma Lindgren Anderson. His name was later changed from Anderson to Kavanaugh when he was adopted by his mother's second husband, William "Billy" Kavanaugh, an engineer on the D&RG Railroad. From the verso: "Mother Lupton in Minturn." It's possible that this is Alice Lupton. Alice was born in Arkansas in October of 1856. She married John William 'Bill" Lupton in July of 1871/2 (there are conflicting dates). They moved to the area in the 1880s and settled in Gypsum. For a time however, it appears they resided in Minturn as Bill had accepted a job as a special officer for the Rio Grande Railroad at Minturn. Bill passed away in 1940 at the...
